RECOM 0.5A switching regulator of the R-78 series further improved

RECOM's popular R-78 switching regulator series - a drop-in replacement for lossy linear types - is now available for an extended input voltage range up to 40V and a higher operating ambient temperature up to +100°C.

The new, cost-effective R-78CK-0.5 series is available with outputs of 3.3, 5, 12 or 15V, all of which deliver a rated current of 0.5A with a conversion efficiency of up to 96%. Thanks to the low losses, no heat sinks are required, reducing material and assembly costs and saving valuable PCB space. If the parts are operated at their minimum input voltages, minimal derating may be required up to an ambient temperature of +100°C, depending on the variant. Depending on the variant, the full output current of 0.5A can be tapped at higher input voltages up to a temperature of at least +65°C.

Comprehensive protection against input undervoltage, short circuits and overheating is guaranteed. In addition, the parts are certified to IEC/EN 62368-1, 3rd edition.

Further improvements over the existing R-78E series include a lower permissible input-output differential voltage for the parts with outputs of 3.3 and 5V, a lower quiescent current and a smaller package size in each direction while retaining the usual pinout assembly.

Unlike linear regulators, the parts can be configured to produce a negative output from a positive input. The connection details can be found in the data sheet.
