RECOM R-78K switching regulator with new technology for better performance

Switching regulator

The RECOM R-78E series of three-terminal switching regulators is a very popular, high-efficiency replacement for three-terminal TO-220 linear regulators that saves energy, board space and cost by eliminating heat sinks and their mounting requirements. During 2023, RECOM will launch upgrades of this series under the name R-78Kxx with improved specifications.

There are 0.5A, 1A and 2A versions available, with fixed outputs now including 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 6.5V depending on the model, as well as traditional 3.3V, 5V, 9V, 12V and 15V outputs. The input voltage range has been extended to a maximum of 36V and the peak efficiency has been increased to 96% over the entire range, so that all products can be operated at temperatures from -40°C to 90°C - many of them without derating.

All components in the R-78K series feature undervoltage cut-off and short-circuit protection with automatic recovery and can meet EMC specifications to EN 55032 Class B with a simple input filter. The 0.5A and 1A rated versions are housed in a miniature SIP-3 package with a footprint of 11.5 x 7.55mm and a height of 10.2mm, while the 2A version has a footprint of 11.5 x 8.5mm and a height of 17.5mm, also in a SIP-3 arrangement.

Technical data of the switching regulator

  • Efficiency of up to 96%, no heat sinks required
  • 4.5V to 36Vdc wide input range
  • -40°C to +90°C Operating temperature range, without derating
  • Pin Compatible with Series 78 switching controllers
